Enjoying the beauty and health benefits provided by the environment is important; however, we must be aware of the protective practices necessary to enjoy safely.  The SunWise program is a free environmental and health education program to teach K–8 children about sun safety, UV radiation, and stratospheric ozone. Educators who join the SunWise program receive a FREE tool kit with over 50 cross-curricular, standards-based activities and a UV-sensitive Frisbee for hands-on learning and physical fitness.

You can register for the program if you have:

  • An educator of at least 10 students in grades kindergarten through 8th grade
  • A single class, school, or whole entire school district
  • An afterschool educator, a teacher trainer, a university professor, a camp counselor, or other group or individual working
  • A county or state health, recreation, or education department               To participate in the SunWise program, you must be a part of at least one of the following SunWise activities:
    • Cross-curricular classroom lessons
    • UV measurement and reports on the internet
    • Reaching out to the community and inviting guest speakers to form business partnerships
    • School-wide sun safety activities (school assemblies or other programs)                                                                  from the beginning, the goal of the SunWise program has been to educate children and adults who care for them, about the risks in their health, associated with the UV radiation, and also how to protect yourself from it.. Skin cancer cases still continue to be more prevalent.

Teaching children about sun safety at an early age helps to show them a lifetime of healthy habits. It is estimated that by 2015 the SunWise education will have helped more than 11,000 cases of skin cancer and 50 premature deaths. While this program is very effective, it has also proven to be far reaching to others.

MYTH AND FACTS ABOUT TOBACCO

Myth- Smoking is not a drug problem.

Smoking is a drug problem because if u smoke once just like if you use a drug once it has a high chance of becoming addicting. So if you dont smoke at all then you do not even have to worry abouct it becomig addicting. So people know it but they still do it and then they have trouble quitting.
Myth- only adults smoke cigarettes.
Not only adults smoke because most people start smoking in their teens. And back in the day babies could smoke and now a days teen are illegally buying it from drug dealers
Myth- Once you are addicted to tobacco, there is no use in trying to quit using. The damage is done.
No because if u try about five times to quit you could be able to stop fully and lose any possible diseases from smoke after 10-15 years. and after a week you could stop having temptations.
Myth- Smoking helps my body relax.
That is not true because nicotine is a stimulant which speeds up the body instead of slowing it down. so you are doing the opposite of what you were trying to do by smoking which will keep you up longer.
Myth- Smoking will help me lose weight or I will gain weight of I quit smoking.
That is not true because 1 third lose weight, 1 third gain and, 1 third stay the same from smoking so u could do all so to avoid it do not and you could avoid them all. If you do not even want to risk it then then i would not recommend it but people still do it.

The sources of carcinogen damage to the body is not only tobacco, but the smoke from burning tobacco is. Carcinogen is a cancer causing substance.  Cigarette smoke contains  tar  a thick, sticky, dark fluid produced when tobacco burns. As tar penetrates the smoker’s respiratory system, it destroys cilia, tiny hairlike structures that line the upper airways and protect against infection. Tar damages the alveoli, or air sacs, which absorb oxygen and rid the body of carbon dioxide. It also destroys lung tissues, making the lungs less able to function.Lungs damaged from smoking are more susceptible to diseases such as bronchitis, pneumonia, emphysema, and cancer. Carbon monoxide, another compound found in cigarette smoke,  is a colorless, odorless, and poisonous gas that is taken up more readily by the blood than oxygen in the blood, thereby depriving the tissues and cells of oxygen. It also increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and hardening of the arteries. Cigars contain significantly more nicotine and produce more tar and carbon monoxide than cigarettes do. One cigar can contain as much nicotine as a pack of cigarettes. Pipe and cigar smokers have an increased  risk of developing cancers of the lip, mouth, and throat.
